On May 29, 2019 AB 5 – Worker status: independent contractors (Gonzalez) was debated and brought up on the floor for a vote, and passed 59-15 along party lines. The author committed that the bill is a work in progress and that it will be amended further in the Senate. She specifically said she is committed to finding a way to protect independent owner operators who have invested money into their trucks as well as clarifying a business to business exemption. In addition to the author, several other members spoke about the need for further amendments/clarifications.
